What was with that flag? Why was it on badges, T-shirts, and everywhere else?

The Flag

The ship and the flag have more in common than people realised. The blue and yellow flag used by LASER558 had a much deeper meaning than most people knew. It wasn’t just a colourful logo or a bright picture to put on a T-shirt. The flag is actually a maritime signal flag with a universal meaning.

The Meaning

In the spirit of pirate radio broadcasting and the idea of the airwaves being ‘free’, the owners of LASER558 chose this particular flag for its meaning. According to the International Code of Signals, the flag stands for “I wish to communicate with you.”

The Ship

Onboard a ship called the Communicator, under a flag and logo meaning ‘I wish to communicate with you’, and the Communicator Club for listeners to join and win prizes, it’s clear to see that a lot more thought went into the marketing than a lot of people realised at the time.
